REFUSE THE RENT INCREASE! WHY AND HOW DO I DO THAT?
GUEST SPEAKER: ROBBERT VULLINGS RENTAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST
We believe: tenants are not cash cows, are they? Housing costs in the Netherlands are among the highest in Europe. Proposals for rent freezes were voted down in the House of Representatives. This shows that for a majority, landlord interests are more important than the poverty of many tenants. Because for many people the rents are too high. More than 800,000 households have insufficient money left over for essential living expenses after paying the rent. Despite the fact that there is rent allowance... Half of the tenants have difficulty making ends meet, 40% experiences financial scarcity and 30% has payment arrears. The average housing ratio for tenants is 38% and for private tenants it is even 42.6%. Between 1990 and 2020, rental prices in the Netherlands increased by 162%. This meant that rents rose 1.8 times faster than inflation, which rose slightly less than 90% in the same period.
