The highest rent increase in 30 years is coming in 2024, and most corporations plan to implement the maximum rent increase. This is not the case for many tenants' associations, in times of increasing insecurity. Corporations often do not respond to these concerns, and tenants' associations struggle with the landlord's position of power in rent increase negotiations. The We Refuse the Rent Increase campaign offers opportunities to put extra pressure on the landlord during these negotiations. Tenants' associations, for example, can choose not to agree to the rent increase. If the landlord does not respond, they can call on their members en masse to collectively refuse the rent increase based on our Step-by-Step Plan.

We hope that this invitation reaches you in good health. In response to the impending rent increases, which are the highest in 30 years, we call on all tenants to unite and participate in our national action meeting on February 3 in Den Bosch. Together we can make a difference in the fight for affordable housing.

01/07/23 – It's the 1st of July: the tenant action has officially started! The month of the rent increase has arrived. Politicians and our landlords have again failed to freeze rents this year in order to make and keep housing affordable again. Even after the abolition of the landlord levy, which has come directly from the wallets of social tenants, no compensation or tax relief has been forthcoming, while inflation reached record highs and fewer and fewer people make ends meet at the end of the month.

29/05/23 – On June 9, the action group Wij Weigeren de Rent Increase (WWDH) will distribute door-to-door flyers in the Molenwijk district in The Hague for a rent freeze as of July 1. The national action group demands a rent freeze on all rents for the next five years and reinforces this demand by refusing the annual rent increase with as many people as possible. 

We explain how tenants can also refuse the rent increase, look ahead to the announced rent increase and back to the Rochdale action of March 29.

Jaap, a combative, 68-year-old pensioner, is sitting in the kitchen of his apartment when I speak to him. He tells me about his colorful past as a nurse and about the conscription he refused because of conscientious objections. When he starts talking about the apartment where he and his wife have been living since March 8, 2021, I notice that he cares deeply. The new-build apartment had looked good on paper and when he and his wife were looking for a smaller home due to chronic heart and lung complaints, they didn't have to think twice before registering as a tenant.
