Since 1993, rents have increased by 141%! This year there will be a maximum of 5.8% on top of that! While our wages have been moderated, rent has become unaffordable after years of cuts, mismanagement and market forces.
Rent increase since 1993: 👉 141%
Increase in collective labor agreement wages since 1993: 👉 93%
Inflation since 1993: 👉 87%
With again 5,8% rent increase, we will arrive at a total rent increase of 155% compared to 1993! This means that the rents are more than 2.5x as expensive and has risen much faster than our wages or inflation. With the current rent increase policy of increasing collective labor agreement wages -0.5%, it will take decades before wages are back to the same level as the rent.
Action group 'We Refuse the Rent Increase' is fighting for social security and a multi-year rent freeze. We do this by massively refusing the annual rent increase as of July 1 based on a simple step-by-step plan.
Step-by-step plan
Before 1 May, almost all tenants will receive a rent increase proposal. Refusing this proposal is a right that you have as a tenant and can be done on the basis of our step-by-step plan. We will inform you of the first steps you can take:
1. Sign up!
Registering on our website is the first step towards rent freezing. Most of you will have already taken this step. Still not registered yet? Then do that anyway!
2. Stop the automatic rent collection from your landlord as of July 1, 2024
An important next step to refuse the rent increase as of 1 July is to stop the direct debit of the rent payment to your landlord. Rent is often automatically debited because you have given permission for this at the beginning of the rental period. Through our form letter Fill in and send it to your landlord, you can simply withdraw this direct debit and ensure that your landlord does not automatically increase the rent as of 1 July.
3. Receipt of rent increase proposal
May 1st is fast approaching. This means that more and more of you are receiving the rent increase proposal. This letter states the new proposed rent as of July 1, 2024 and you can read that you can submit an objection to your landlord before July 1, 2024. To be able to participate in our promotion advised against we expressly ask you to make use of this. It reduces your chances of success and you only saddle yourself with unnecessary paperwork.
By performing these first 3 steps, you have made a good start with refusing the rent increase as of 1 July. For the next steps you can already take a look at our website under roadmap, or download the complete step-by-step plan as pdf!
